The North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences, right here in Raleigh, has unseated the Biltmore house and gardens as the most-visited museum or historic site in the state. This is the first time in nine years that Biltmore has not topped the list, which is done by Matthews-based firm Carolina Publishing Associates. The science museum boasted 1,220,814 visitors in 2012, and attendance was bolstered by the opening of the new Nature Research Center, which attracted over 70,000 visitors just over the course of its 24-hour grand opening in April. Other notable Triangle attractions that made the list include Marbles Kids Museum, the Museum of Life and Sciences, the North Carolina Museum of History, and the North Carolina Museum of Art.
