#TBT It’s mid-August, which means it’s back to school time! We are throwing back today to the beginning of the twentieth century with a postcard of the Baptist Female University, which opened in 1891 in downtown Raleigh, on a one acre lot on Blount Street. The school changed its name in 1904 to the Baptist University for Women. In 1909, the name was changed yet again to Meredith College. The college moved to its current location on Hillsborough Street in 1924. The building on Blount Street was acquired by the State of North Carolina in 1950, and was demolished in 1967. Today, approximately 2,000 women are enrolled in the liberal arts college, which also includes a co-ed graduate school. Happy Thursday!
