It sounds like we can expect some cold, icy weather tonight and tomorrow here in the Triangle. Here are a few tips (besides stocking up on firewood and marshmallows for s’mores) to prepare your home for cold weather like this!
-Protect your pipes! Insulate pipes with insulation or something like newspaper, and you can even let the water run at a trickle to avoid having the pipes freeze. Make sure you know how to turn off your water valves in case a pipe bursts!
-Salt your driveway or use another environmentally-friendly treatment to prevent your driveway and walkways from freezing and being a slipping hazard.
-Keep a fire extinguisher on hand, especially if you plan on using your fireplace
-If your windows are old and inefficient you can cover them from the inside with plastic to keep heat in.
-Stock up on blankets and warm clothes in case you face a power outage
